How We Began

History of the Lifeguard Initiative

The Lifeguard Initiative was first conceived in in early 2017 by William Lawyer on Quora as a means of addressing the stranglehold of information that pro-choice advocates had on the popular Q&A site. At the time, there was virtually no pro-life presence on Quora, and even those few pro-life writers who were active received little to no attention.

In an effort to help inform others about abortion and bring pro-life ideas into focus among this community, William Lawyer brought together a group of pro-life writers and created a blog on Quora known as 'Defense of the Pro-Life Movement,' or DotPM, with the objective of creating a pro-life community of writers and inspiring others to produce more pro-life content.

In 2019, the blog was expanded when Quora launched their new Space functions, and was rebranded as "The Lifeguard Initiative." The mission remained much the same, but having attained it's early goals of breaking the pro-choice echo chamber and bringing together a community, we shifted our focus towards better informing people about abortion and spreading pro-life ideas.

Today, the Lifeguard Initiative has grown in size and influence to include a diverse group of over a hundred writers and contributors dedicated to educating people about abortion and inspiring others to defend the unborn. With our own website and a presence across many platforms, the Lifeguard Initiative has become an extremely influential source of pro-life activism online.

WHAT SETS THE LIFEGUARD INITIATIVE APART FROM OTHER PRO-LIFE GROUPS?

The Lifeguard Initiative shares some similarities to many other pro-life groups on the internet, but is rather unique in it's total focus on abortion, and only abortion.

We are a place where pro-life advocates of all stripes and perspectives can gather, regardless of any differing opinions they may hold in regards to other subjects. To maintain incivility and a focus on our primary purpose of ending abortion, we strive to remain politically neutral in regards to other issues of political contention, such as firearms, immigration, religion, contraception, suicide, and the death penalty.

Many other pro-life spaces have made it a part of their mission to represent other views of their members in regards to various other subjects. Some promote left or right wing values outside of abortion, others share religious focuses or the promotion of atheism, or represent specific groups with their own goals.

While we support these groups and the invaluable work they do, by focusing on too many other issues we risk diluting our focus and excluding potential allies who do not share universal views in regards to other issues. We believe that there needs to be more organizations specifically devoted to ending abortion, and that is why the Lifeguard Initiative exists.
